At this time of year, the odds of coming across a kitten outdoors go way up! While so many good samaritans want to step in and help a kitten or kittens found cold and alone, here are a couple of important reminders! First, if you find a group of kittens, mom might not be far away but hiding from you. Kittens remaining with moms is always best! Second, a kitten that is shivering and cold needs to be warmed up before any other interventions are tried. Providing warmth is the highest priority for a kitten in distress. Trying to feed replacement formula to a cold kitten can cause their body to shut down completely. The graphic below provides great information on how to assess temperature and warm properly before feeding is attempted. Gums should be pink and paws should feel warm before food is offered. This extra step can be the difference between life and death.
