😳 Does your voice sound "pinched"?
Anticipating the consonants when singing is one of the most common things that holds back a free, resonant voice!
Here’s why we do it: When we speak, our brains are wired to rely heavily on consonants to get our point across quickly. Spoken language is fast, choppy, and efficient.
But singing is a whole different ball game.
Singing is sustained speech. The tone, the beauty, and the power of your voice actually live entirely inside the vowel sounds. Consonants are just the little goalposts that start and end the sound.
When you anticipate the consonant, you choke off your air supply and cut your resonance short.
The secret? Hang onto that vowel for 95% of the note, and flick the consonant away at the very last millisecond!

🫣 Your voice isn't FLIPPING because you're fighting it.
So many singers think the glottal shift is a bad thing and try to smooth it right out of their voice. But it can actually be your BEST FRIEND for vocal flips! It adds that effortless, cool stylistic edge to your favorite songs.
The glottal shift is what triggers that vocal flip in the first place, using a brief, intentional release of breath pressure to let your vocal cords instantly change thickness so your voice can snap cleanly between registers.
Here is how we train it:
1️⃣ Repeat "you" a few times in a thick, heavy chest voice, like your normal speaking voice.
2️⃣ Switch to "hoo" in your head voice, making it soft and airy like a dove.
3️⃣ Alternate between them to isolate that heavy vocal fold intensity from the light intensity.
4️⃣ Do a slow vocal bend up into the high note, letting go of some of the volume as you go up to help activate the glottal shift and trigger the flip!
👀 Step 4 is the HARD PART! Give yourself some grace if it takes a minute to click. Keep practicing until you can isolate the shift for 3 clean flips back-to-back.

❌️ Be honest.. are your riffs like this? 🫣 Like the pitches are undefined, there’s zero styling, and you totally lose the melody halfway through?
Let’s fix that. The exercise I’m breaking down in this reel is usually one of the very FIRST vocal agility exercises I give to my students. It looks simple.. but it is so much harder than it seems for beginners.
Here’s how to approach riffs:
👉 Count the exact number of pitches in the riff.
👉 Group those pitches into sets of threes.
👉 Lean into the first note of each set to inject some styling.
👉 Practice it slowly and accurately before you try to speed it up.
If you're ready to take your voice to the next level, I’ve got you.

Same song ✨️3 different ways✨️
What I really hope you’re noticing in this breakdown is how much the different vocal registers completely change the sound and vibe of the song.
Each register brings a totally unique quality, texture, and emotional layer to the music. That’s exactly why getting comfortable with each of your individual registers is so important.
When you learn to master those transitions, you unlock a whole new level of versatility and expression in your singing.
If you’re ready to level up your own voice and get a clear picture of your current vocal range, I’d love to help you get started.

I am baffled 🤯✨ by how often the singers I work with think they aren’t “good enough”, when they actually have incredibly unique, beautiful voices.
It happens almost every single week in my lessons with students. They will start singing, and their tone is stunning, or their natural placement is so cool, or they have this beautiful, raw vulnerability to their sound. And the moment the song ends, before I can even open my mouth to compliment them, they’re already apologizing
They're picking apart every tiny micro-flaw, or comparing themselves to a heavily produced track they heard on Spotify, convinced they just don't have "it."
It breaks my heart a little bit, because mindset goes such a long way when it comes to singing.
Your voice doesn't need to sound like a carbon copy of anyone else to be good. In fact, the things you might think are "flaws" are usually the exact qualities that give your voice its character and emotional edge.
Remember, be gentle with yourself as you're learning to share your gift with the world 💫🙏

Your voice isn't “breaking” 😅 It may just be a glottal shift. And once you learn how to handle it, that glottal shift can actually become your absolute best friend, because it’s the exact mechanism that helps you do things like vocal flips.
Like in the chorus of “Zombie”, Dolores O'Riordan took that sudden shift in the vocal folds and turned it into pure artistry. When you hear it done like that, it doesn't sound like a mistake at all, it sounds like pure emotion, heartbreak, and grit.
Honestly, learning to control that shift was a total head trip for me. For the longest time, I was so focused on keeping my voice perfectly smooth and seamless, hiding the transition between my registers at all costs. Trying to purposely let my voice break felt wrong, and when I first tried, it honestly just sounded like a bad yodel.
The breakthrough for me was realizing a good vocal flip isn't about panicking or straining. It’s actually about a sudden, purposeful release of muscle tension.
You’re essentially driving your voice in a strong, connected place and then instantly letting the vocal folds shift into a light, airy head voice right on the transition. It’s that exact fraction of a second where the voice unhitches that gives you that beautiful, dramatic cry.
Now, I use them all the time to add a bit of vulnerability or edge to a song.
If you're playing around with this and it feels incredibly clunky right now, give yourself some grace. You’re literally training your brain to lean into the break instead of fighting it. It takes a minute for your muscle memory to realize you're doing it on purpose, so embrace the weird cracks while your voice figures out the coordinates!

🛑 STOP thinking your voice is bad.. the problem might be your resonance or tone.
Honestly, even for me, figuring out the map of my own internal acoustics was a total trial by fire. Early on, I spent so much time with my voice trapped squarely in my throat, or laryngeal resonance. When you keep your throat relaxed, it gives you this gorgeous, moody, warm base. I also learned to lean into my nasal resonance, which gets a terrible rap, but is actually a total superpower. A little bit of nose placement adds this sharp, bright "ping" that helps your voice cut through a heavy instrumental track without you having to scream.
It takes making some seriously weird noises and a lot of clumsy trial and error, so definitely don't stress if it feels awkward right now. Your voice isn't broken; you're just learning how to tune it!

💥 Head v.s Mix 💥 If you’ve ever gone for a high note and either ended up sounding like a gentle, airy Disney princess (head voice) or like you’re accidentally yelling at your neighbor (a strained chest voice trying to survive rather than mix), you are so not alone.
It all comes down to the vibe and texture you want to bring to the song..
Think of your head voice as your sweet, effortless escape hatch. It’s light, bright, and beautifully clear because the sound is resonating way up high.
But then… there’s mixed voice.
Instead of choosing between light and the heaviness of chest voice, mixed voice lets you sneak the warmth and conversational power of your lower voice right up into your high notes.
It’s how your favorite artists hit those big, emotional high lines and make them sound totally effortless and full, without sounding like an opera singer or a siren.
It definitely takes a little time and some trial-and-error to get your muscle memory to find that sweet spot, so definitely don't stress if it doesn't click overnight.
