Build a 2-Minute Wren Box From a Milk Carton — One Pair Feeds 9,000 Caterpillars to Their Chicks
One empty half-gallon milk carton. Cut a 1-inch hole near the top. Nail it to a fence post in your vegetable garden. You just installed a caterpillar vacuum that runs all day from April through August.
A nesting pair of house wrens brings food to their chicks every three minutes. Not seeds — caterpillars, inchworms, cabbage loopers, and the small larvae that skeletonize your kale overnight. Over a single brood cycle, that's 9,000 insects pulled off your plants by two birds that weigh less than a AA battery.
Wrens are aggressive nesters. They don't need a perfect box — they need a cavity with a hole small enough to keep sparrows and starlings out. One inch is the magic number. Too big and house sparrows take over. Too small and the wrens can't squeeze through. A waxed milk carton weathers an entire season and the waterproof coating keeps the nest dry through spring rain.
Mount it 5 to 8 feet high on a post or tree trunk near leafy cover. Wrens are territorial — one pair claims your entire yard and patrols every row.
One milk carton. Nine thousand caterpillars. The pest control runs on breadcrumbs and birdsong.
