13TH is a strong, conscience raising social justice documentary. I learned a lot and I am definitely awakened by the information.

Part of change is being aware of the actual truths of our justice system. The impact of how our laws and justice systems are put into place by a group of people who are not elected, who are not lawmakers, but can pull the strings.

REFORM or RECONSTRUCTION?
If history has taught us anything, then we know that dismantling the system is the change we truly need.

I remember taking an African American studies class during my first years in college. I didn’t think anything of it but I would get a lot of questions from friends about why am I taking the class. I’m glad I did. I learned so much from my professor at the time. He had us read books and discuss them in class. I am so grateful he did. These books challenged the history and the system I thought I understood.

I was never much of a reader and couldn’t wait to hand in my books at the end of each semester but I kept these books because of the impact I felt afterwards.

Most of us are learning, unlearning, listening, reading, and challenging ourselves to do better. There are lists of things we could do BUT...

The solution is not a one-answer fits all. I could list different petitions, donations, or 1-800 numbers to call but we can all play a part in the change by finding what you are most passionate about? What part of this whole crazy system speaks to your heart?❤️

Antiracism should be a way of life that we constantly commit to and as educators, we commit to in our classrooms because we play an essential role in making sure we are teaching truths to our students.
