🌈😔 Hopsander (Hops) Claws IV, renowned bar critic and puppy mill survivor, left this world on Saturday July 29, 2023, surrounded by his two Humans and sister Porter. He was 13 yrs, 3 mos old.

More of a person than a dog, the only dog-like things Hops loved were playing fetch, skidding around on sandy beaches, taking long walks, and guarding the front porch. He abhorred snow and disliked garbage cans and horses - we imagine because of the smell.

Hops largely preferred to bask in simple human pleasures. He enjoyed Michelin starred restaurants but loved Arby’s. He appreciated a good cheese and a lazy afternoon. Hops relished sitting on a sunny patio in the autumn, as summer often proved to be a little too warm and spring a little too wet.

Above all else, Hops’ favorite human activity was traveling. He adored it as it gave him the opportunity to do what he did best – greet his many fans. Whether in Cinque Terre or Cleveland, he found it necessary to say hello to all of the people. Hops operated under the assumption that he was everyone’s favorite, and he was right. Hops’ gentle and friendly demeanor brought smiles to faces, turning strangers into friends.

Bravely battling tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma for 19 mos., and later kidney failure, Hops didn’t slow down until about a month or so before his death. Hops spent his last days in his favorite spot – in his bed in front of the front door, barking at the various delivery people who arrived at his house.

We will think of him when we hear a doorbell. We will think of him when we visit our neighborhood bars. We will think of him every time we get on a plane. We will think of him every day. Ultimately, Hops was the earthly embodiment of this universal truth: when it comes to love of your life, the last time of any little moment – whether mundane, joyous, or absolutely heartbreaking - always comes way too soon.

R.I.P., Baby Bear. We love you so much. We’ll love you forever.
