Peripheral neuropathy is a medical condition caused by damage to the peripheral nervous system, the vast communications network that transmits information from the brain and spinal cord (i.e., the central nervous system) to every other part of the body.1 Peripheral nerves also send sensory information back to the brain and spinal cord, such as a message that the feet are cold or a finger is burned.

What is peripheral neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy is an umbrella term for nerve diseases that affect a specific subdivision of your nervous system. Many different conditions can cause peripheral neuropathy, which means a wide range of symptoms is also possible. Peripheral neuropathy can also affect different body parts, depending on how and why it happens.
