Did you know slate actually formed between 435 and 570 million years ago? According to The National Slate Association, slate is actually a 'metamorphic rock comprised of minerals and clays that has been exposed to extended periods of pressure.'

We do not recommend installing a slate roof as a do-it-yourself project – even if you are an experienced roofer. The structural requirements of the building, and the tools and materials that are needed differ significantly from those required for asphalt shingles.

It’s important to remember that modern metal roofing materials aren’t quite as noisy as they were in the early days of roofing. If you want all the benefits of a metal roof without increasing your home’s noise level, you may be happy to learn that metal roofs have roughly the same noise level as traditional roofing shingles.
