Pokeweed (phytolacca americana) evolved in North America and is naturalized around the temperate world. They grow in the forest under-story and you may see one popping up in the garden since birds tend to spread their seeds.

Pokeberries contain the pigment betalain, giving them this color; but this color is sensitive to light and oxygen, meaning it often doesn’t last long.

When I tried to make a pokeberry lake it faded to an almost white-pink shade, so I made this illustration for my zine with fresh poke ink 💗💗

My textile piece “Cosmos” which is made with up cycled cotton printed with natural dyes, minerals and plants from my garden will part of the exhibition Entwined at beginning on October 19th. Excited to be part of this show all about human interconnection with nature and what that might mean. Rather than an opening there will be a closing reception on Nov. 4th, 6-9pm 💜
