From our chapter President to President Obama..
How refreshing it is to salute you Sir! I am Cheryl Thurston, the Chapter President of the National Federation of the Blind of California - Inland Empire Chapter. I am also a Board Member of our California Affiliate. It is such an honor to be able to write you and make a needed request that is beyond the normal "greeting" for a birthday, wedding, or such. To be more specific, the voting rights for the disabled.
I am writing to request a virtual appearance at our upcoming
convention this October 2020. As you may already know, October is
the National Disability Awareness Month observance. At the National Federation of the Blind of California, we want to emphasize the importance of voting despite any disability. With the mounting uncertainties of legitimate voting being overtly suppressed by the current administration, we want to encourage all impaired citizens.
The right to vote based on the American with Disabilities Act (and other federal laws) must be enforced for all citizens. With the recent news of voters in Fairfax, Virginia being blocked and harassed while trying to exercise their right to vote early, our chapter would like an encouraging word to keep up our fight for equality, especially voting.
With the election looming, we do not want disabled citizens to feel threatened by the wayward actions of the current administration. We request a 3-5 minute video to excite our community at the convention and those throughout the United States. Our White Cane Safety Day is October 15, 2020, however, the virtual state convention is October 22 – 25, 2020. Any word of encouragement is welcomed and appreciated.
On behalf of The National Federation of the Blind of California, we thank you in advance. Understanding you and former First Lady Michelle are one of the most admired couples of the world, we know you are busy. We thank you for your time and consideration of this request. Hoping for continued health, prosperity and love for you and your family – thank you for your continued service.
Sincerely, Cheryl Thurston
