You don't need a deep art history background to feel the energy in this one. Jack Meanwell, who taught at the Art Academy of Cincinnati for over 25 years, painted "Play" in 1994 with his practiced yet loose, broad brushwork. Notice which color draws you in first, and where it takes your eye.

Stop by and see it hanging in our current show, "The Language of Color in Art."

This triptych by Josie Kirby provides three excellent examples of how one artist constructs layered, fragmented forms from objects in nature. Kirby's shells are shaped by the ocean: beaten, pitted, salted, on their way to becoming sand, and she works to capture that process rather than the finished form. The result is a layered, intuitive composition in acrylic, graphite, and acrylic marker on panel.

Lewis Henry Meakin studied under Duveneck, taught at the Cincinnati Art Academy for decades, and served as curator of the Cincinnati Art Museum from 1911 until his death in 1917. This landscape shows exactly why George Wesley Bellows called him "one of the best landscape painters in America."

In anticipation of our next show, "The Language of Color in Art," we're showcasing this thematically appropriate piece by Mark Serrianne. Comprised of an antique Eberhard Faber retail display and an authentic early photograph of John Eberhard Faber himself, this artwork honors the legacy of the New York family who built America's first large-scale pencil factory and helped put color in the hands of artists for generations.

See it at the show this Friday, April 17th, 5 - 8pm!
