Are you treating your personal insurance like a strategy…. or a Panic button?
That 1-800 number on the back of your auto or home policy? It’s not an automatic claim button for every ding, drip, or “slight inconvenience.”
Filing a claim the second something happens can feel like relief—until your renewal hits. One small claim can spike your premiums, trigger a non-renewal, or even make you “uninsurable” with your current carrier.
This is personal lines insurance—your car, your home, your peace of mind. The real purpose? Protecting you from the catastrophic, not reimbursing every minor hassle.
Here’s how to think (and act) like a strategist:
Know your deductibles– Comfortable paying the first $500 or $1,000 out of pocket? That’s often smarter than a claim.
Understand the ripple effect– A small fender-bender claim today could cost you hundreds, if not thousands, in higher premiums over the next 3–5 years.
Maintain proactively– Regular roof inspections, tree trimming, driveway sealing, pipe cleaning, or installing new brakes, rotating or buying new tires aren’t just “nice-to-haves”—they prevent claims before they start.
Review your loss run– Ever wonder why your agent asks for a claims history report? It’s not paperwork. It’s them fighting to keep your rates down and your coverage intact.
Work with a broker who educates you before the storm, not just after. They’ll help you decide: “Is this worth claiming… or worth handling myself?”
Risk management should be proactive, not reactive. It’s knowing when to self-insure the small stuff so your policy is there when you really need it.
Just renewed? Shopping around? If your agent asked for your claims history, they’re not being nosy—they’re protecting your future. If they don’t ask about your claims to begin with, run.
So ask yourself: “Am I treating insurance like a strategy… or a panic button?”

From taking swings (and a few extra paid mulligans) to reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones, it was a day filled with fun, networking, and giving back.
