Chapter 2 “Before I Got My Name” Excerpt

One late December day in 2004 in the early morning hours, I was lying in bed with ‘my husband’. I felt sick, hot, and it was hard to breathe. I went downstairs to the family room because it’s always cooler there. I laid on the couch. There was a pain inside my right chest. I felt like this for days. I finally went to my primary care provider. After she examined me, she wanted me to get some X-rays. Then came the CT, followed by an MRI. She wanted me to see a specialist......
What followed for Deborah was as story of emotional highs and lows that led to multiple tests, a diagnosis of cancer, and surgery. Here’s more of her story:.....
After the surgery (March 2005), the doctor came to my room and said to ‘my husband’ and me, “I have good news. I have bad news. And I have better news. Good news: You don’t have cancer. Bad news: You have histoplasmosis. Better news: You can’t get it again once you’ve had ‘histo.’ But you have to see a specialist.”

Chapter 3 “Post-Operation” Excerpt

More years. At one point, my primary care provider diagnosed me with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM).

Then more years. I wrote my primary care provider a letter about how challenging and worse my day-to-day living was becoming. In her office, she asked, “Would you like to see a neurologist? I can find one for you and write a referral.” I said yes.

After many tests, procedures, blood work, etc., the neurologist began telling me about my condition. I felt like I’d finally found a doctor and his team who understood me. They were diving in headfirst. They hit the nail right on the head. They told me what I was to look further to and what I was going to start experiencing. They were not wrong.

The year was 2012. I was finally able to put a name to who I have become. MY NAME IS ... PLS.
