A kid has never walked onto a playground and said: "Hmm. This surfacing system appears to be reaching the end of its useful life." But they do absolutely notice when a space is easier to play on.

Our friends at Johnson Elementary in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, are getting a fresh new turf playground featuring Envirofill, replacing the old mulch surface with something better for running, playing, falling down, getting back up, and then doing it all over again. Exactly how recess was intended.

Not every field has to be in a official stadium or school campus. Some fields live between office buildings. In the middle of where people work, recharge. Some fields live within gathering spaces.

That's what makes projects like this so interesting.

A well-designed sports space doesn't just support competition. It creates opportunities for all the spontaneous moments that can happen when a ball and an open field are nearby. Because the most successful fields aren't the ones people admire from afar.
