Be very careful in this heat! Check out these tips to help keep your cat cool in the summertime!
1. Keep your cat well groomed; excess fur is uncomfortable and can hold body heat in similar to a sweater. DO NOT SHAVE YOUR CAT unless it is matted. Fur also protects the skin from sun and excess heat.
2. Stroke your cat with a damp washcloth. Remember that cat's can't dissipate heat via sweating through most of the surface area of their skin. A damp cloth, particularly on the ears, face, and paw pads can be very helpful.
3. Use a small fan near where he/she likes to lay. Put a bucket of ice in front of the fan or a damp cloth near it to blow cool moist air
4. Leave fresh water around the house. Multiple water sources will help kitty stay hydrated.
5. Close curtains and blinds during the day. This will help keep sunlight from heating the interior of your house
6. Keep cool flooring uncovered. Allow cats access to cooler surfaces such as tile or linoleum to help cool down their paw pads when they stand on it.
7. Elevate your cat's bed; this will allow for better air circulation around your cat.
8. Use these tips for the other mammals in your house such as dogs and rabbits. Help everyone stay safe and healthy this summer!
