Beef tallow for your face?
Why most skin professionals say pass.

I get the appeal. It’s simple, ancestral, and it can feel instantly soothing on very dry skin. But facial skin behaves differently than elbows and heels, and here’s why we keep tallow off faces in professional settings:
1. It clogs. Heavy in oleic and stearic acids, tallow forms a thick occlusive seal that seal traps sebum and debris and drives breakouts.
2. Irritation risk. Occlusives lock in heat, which can flare rosacea, perioral dermatitis, and sensitivity. Added fragrance to mask scent is a second trigger.
3. The vitamin story is thin. Trace A, D, E, K, B12 are present, but research shows amounts are small and skin absorption is unproven. It is not a substitute for formulated ceramides, retinoids, or antioxidants.
—Even for the driest skin types, that initial softness is usually temporary. If someone tolerates it, dermatologists generally suggest keeping it to the body — hands, elbows, knees, heels — not the face, where pores are denser and reactions show faster.
**This is education, not medical advice. Talk with your dermatologist before trying animal-fat balms.
