Ci3 Statement on Youth Reproductive Rights Following Supreme Court Decision

We support access to abortion care and support young people’s ability to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and future, despite today’s Supreme Court decision.

Since the national press leaked Justice Alto’s opinion draft in May, Illinois lawmakers have affirmed that abortion care will remain safe and legal in the state. The repeal of Illinois’ law requiring parental involvement in abortion also went into effect June 1, 2022, an effort led by state-wide advocates and informed by evidence of the harm caused by the law. However, given today’s news, we know that it will now be harder for young people across the country to access safe and time-sensitive care.

We held conversations with our Youth Advisory Council members to understand their perspectives about the future of reproductive health. They had many questions about what might happen next and expressed concern for their own futures (see below).

Now more than ever, it’s important to understand adolescent s*xual and reproductive health needs and advocate with and on behalf of young people, so they can emerge into adulthood with agency over their own bodies and futures.

We encourage you to follow our partners for the latest resources for parents, caregivers, and young people.

Pediatrician Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha exposed the Flint Water Crisis after finding, through research, that children were exposed to dangerous levels of lead in Flint, Michigan.

“I did something most doctors and scientists don’t usually do,” said Dr. Hanna-Attisha. “I literally walked out of my clinic with my white coat on and stood up in one of our hospital conference rooms where we usually have resident lectures. I shared the research that our kids are in harm’s way and I demanded action."

Today, she is dedicated to improving the health and development of children, through developing programs in healthcare, early education, and parental education programs.
