The quill was a writing tool constructed of a molted flight feather of a large bird. The earliest ancestor of the pen is suggested to be the brush the Chinese used for writing by the first millennium BCE. The early Egyptians however, employed thick reeds for pen like implements about 300 BCE. Quills offered control when writing with ink before the invention of the dip pen, the metal-nibbed pen, the fountain pen, and, eventually, the ballpoint pen. The shift to the quill pen occurs in the seventh-century writings of St. Isidore of Sevilla.
