CAL and sued giant shrimp producer in D.C. Superior Court for false and deceptive marketing under the Consumer Protection Procedures Act (CPPA).
The lawsuit alleges that the supply chain is riddled with environmentally destructive practices and exploitative labor practices, including forced labor, hazardous working conditions, and unfair and unlivable wages. Despite clear evidence of these conditions, touts social and environmental programs and labels to market their products as “responsibly sourced” and state that they engage in “fair labor practices.” These programs and labels do little to guarantee sustainability in the shrimp supply chain, where many workers live on poverty wages, work in unsanitary conditions, and receive unlivable housing.
Companies like need to stop exploiting shrimp workers, harming the environment, and misleading consumers.
