The saying “smarter farms, sweeter yields” particularly apply to this group who has known each other for more than 65 years, some longer than others. Proudly displaying photos from 1st and 2nd grade at Betsy Ross Elementary School class of 1949 and 1950, and high school yearbooks from Englewood Classes. The group get together for a day in a month to wish a Happy Birthday 🎂 to their life friends. Sensitive to the importance of friendship, sharing, kindness and acceptance, they reverently reminisce about the past and share stories that included Chicago history. Before there was Uber, Jitney Cab would drive on main streets in African American neighborhoods picking up fares that would share the ride with each other. An economical way of getting around and a ground breaking business plan. “King Drive” (Dr. Matin Luther King Drive) was formally South Parkway. Beautiful cobblestone street covered most of the area near 59 and Prairie, and an elevated El passing through the neighborhood. I even saw a modern day copy of the “Green Book”. I can only imagine what other stories can be learned; I believed (and still do) exabytes of experiences are within this group that we can learn from, even use to positively move forward. Then I realized, they’re one generation before me yet so rich in Chicago history.......another priceless experience.
