ADHD in women is missed for so long because it doesn’t look like what anyone expects.

The hyperactivity is real. It just lives inside. It’s the thoughts that never fully quiet down. The mental load that runs constantly in the background. The racing mind at 1am when your body is exhausted but your brain has decided now is a great time to replay every awkward conversation from the last decade.

For decades, ADHD research was done almost exclusively on young boys. The criteria was built around what hyperactivity looks like in them, visible, external, impossible to ignore. Women learned to internalize it instead. To mask it. To look calm on the outside while their nervous system ran at full speed underneath.

So they were called anxious. Sensitive. Overthinkers. And the ADHD was missed completely.

Late diagnosed ADHD in women almost always includes this moment: realizing that the thing you were told you couldn’t have is exactly what you’ve been living with your whole life.

You were not too much. You were not dramatic. You were undiagnosed in a system that was never designed to see you clearly.

Thanks to for portraying this internal dialogue (but also note I’m not diagnosing her, merely using this clip as an example).
