For complex elective cholecystectomy ( ), robotic-assisted surgery was independently associated with fewer unplanned postoperative interventions and a lower complication rate compared to laparoscopic surgery.
Although operating room costs were higher for robotic cases, total hospital costs were similar between robotic and laparoscopic approaches due to reduced complications and downstream interventions in the robotic group.
These findings suggest selective use of the robotic platform for complex gallbladder surgery may optimize clinical outcomes without increasing overall health care expenditures.

Postoperative is often treated reflexively in inpatient surgical settings, but the evidence suggests most episodes are transient and do not indicate true clinical risk.
In the latest JAMA Surgery Author Interviews podcast, Sherry Wren, MD, and Baylee Bakkila, MD, discuss why most cases of elevated blood pressure after surgery are asymptomatic and best managed with observation rather than immediate drug therapy.
The episode highlights measurement error, pain, and transient factors, and explores how overuse of IV medications can increase the risk of harm, including acute kidney injury.
