Happy Birthday, America. 🇺🇸
Two hundred fifty years ago, George Washington helped give birth to a nation. Nearly a century later, Abraham Lincoln challenged that nation to live up to its founding ideals by preserving the Union and issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. Yet even as freedom was proclaimed, Frederick Douglass posed a question that still echoes across generations: "What, to the Slave, Is the Fourth of July?"—challenging America to reconcile its ideals with its reality.
Years later, Walter H. Mazyck, a distinguished member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and then Grand Keeper of Records, continued that conversation through his book, George Washington and the Negro. His work explored the complex relationship between America's founding and the African American experience, reminding us that history is strongest when it is told honestly and completely.
As we celebrate Independence Day, we honor not only the birth of a nation, but also the generations of Black men and women whose labor, sacrifice, military service, intellect, and perseverance helped build, defend, and strengthen it. America has always been a work in progress, and every generation has added another chapter to its promise.
Happy Birthday, America. Here's to celebrating our history, embracing its complexities, and continuing the pursuit of liberty and justice for all. 🇺🇸

Today, we celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, and father figures whose wisdom, sacrifice, and unwavering love help shape future generations.
Fatherhood is among life's greatest privileges and responsibilities. Through their example, guidance, and commitment, fathers leave legacies that extend far beyond themselves and strengthen the families and communities they serve.
Happy Father's Day to all the fathers and father figures throughout the Talented Tenth District and beyond.
