Diesel exhaust exposures can lead to lung cancer, bladder cancer, laryngeal cancer and kidney cancer. These exposures in tunnels can also cause pulmonary conditions such as COPD, emphysema and asthma.

Railroad workers are at elevated risk of developing silicosis, lung cancer, and pulmonary fibrosis as a result of workplace exposures to silica dust. Silica can be found in ballast, which is the rock foundation below the tracks. Silica is also used by railroads in locomotive sanding systems. Sand provides friction, helping locomotives gain traction when pulling and helping to stop the train in emergencies. Maintenance of way workers and those involving in locomotive sanding are at elevated risk for silica exposures.
