Recent monitoring of the drinking water quality in the City of Elgin has revealed higher-than-normal levels of lead in the drinking water in certain homes and buildings in Elgin. The monitoring results represent the homes and buildings with the highest risk of lead in water – those constructed or plumbed before 1988. Lead can leach into the drinking water due to the corrosion of plumbing materials.
