In the spirit of International Women’s Day, we spoke with Gloria Smith, 2019 Chicago Peace Fellow & Executive Director of Black Star Project, whose leadership as newly appointed Chair of the Chicago Peace Fellows Board of Directors highlights her inspiring journey.

To celebrate the women in our community, we’ll be sharing perspectives from our team members throughout the week in honor of International Women’s Day. ✨

🎊Today, the Republic of Kosova celebrates its 18th Anniversary of Independence, a day that means a lot to the people of Kosova, most especially our Communications Associate, Gresë Sermaxhaj.

Gresë has supported the Goldin Institute remotely for over three years, working from Kosovo’s capital, Prishtina, sharing, from afar, the lived stories and resilience that shape our global community.

Community is at the center of everything we do, and moments like this remind us of the personal significance of those stories and how they define us as a global team.

Today, we’re revisiting a reflection Gresë wrote in 2023 on her memory of the war in Kosovo in 1999 and how her work with the Goldin Institute connects to her ongoing commitment to social justice, inspiring us all to continue advocating for change: https://goldininstitute.org/2023/11/29/21st-anniversary/

📷 Gresë working from a local café in Prishtina, where the day only begins after the first coffee. On her table sits the Newborn Monument, a typographic sculpture unveiled on February 17, 2008, the day Kosovo declared its independence.
