We prepare women for birth in so many ways; physically, logistically, even medically. But we spend far less time preparing them for the psychological moment of leaving their baby and returning to work.

That transition can feel unexpectedly heavy, even when it’s chosen.

This piece is an invitation to understand why, through both a psychological and biological lens, and to replace self-doubt with self-compassion.

In honor of Women’s History Month, I’ve been reflecting on the many conversations I have with women in my therapy office each week.

So often, women assume that their exhaustion, anxiety, or self-doubt is a personal shortcoming, when in reality, these experiences are often shaped by invisible labor, life transitions, cultural expectations, and biological changes.

Women’s mental health does not exist in a vacuum. It is deeply connected to the roles women navigate, the relationships they sustain, and the systems they live within.

This post highlights a few of the insights I wish more women knew about their mental health. My hope is that it helps raise awareness about experiences that too often feel isolating.

Supporting women’s wellbeing means creating spaces where these realities can be spoken about openly and where women can receive the support they deserve. Please don’t hesitate to reach out via our website if you are looking for that type of support. We would be honored to be part of your journey.

During Black History Month, we recognize and celebrate Black excellence and accomplishments, while also showing respect to the lessons imparted from many sources of Black wisdom: lessons of care, joy, passion, rest, and community. We continue to be educated by individuals such as James Baldwin, Angela Davis, Audre Lorde, and bell hooks, to name just a few; and we continue to be inspired to advocate for a world that can recognize its history to build a better tomorrow.
Black History extends beyond the days of February, and it is critical that we continuously engage in learning how we are shaped by the past, and how we make history through our choices each day. If you feel called towards it, we encourage you to share a reading, a lesson, an inspiration that you will take with you from this Black History Month into the future.
