An invasive reptile known as the spectacled caiman is spreading across South Florida and moving deeper into the Everglades, according to a new University of Florida study. Introduced through the exotic pet trade, the species has expanded steadily since the late 1970s and now occupies areas used by native alligators and crocodiles. Researchers say the caimans compete for habitat and food.

A group of tropical butterflies may hold clues to slowing the aging process. Researchers found that Heliconius butterflies, native to Central and South American rainforests. They live up to three times longer than their closest relatives, with some surviving nearly a year. One species showed little evidence of age-related physical decline, maintaining its strength as it aged.

Americans are becoming less accepting of several social behaviors, according to a new Gallup survey. Moral approval of birth control, having a baby outside of marriage, gambling, teenage s*x, and animal cloning all declined significantly over the past year, with birth control falling to a record-low 83% approval rate. The findings suggest that decades of growing social permissiveness may be leveling off.
