Tragedy in Bangkok: Fire at Popular Nightspot Claims 28 Lives, 25 in Critical Condition
What began as a regular Sunday evening at a well-known bar in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district ended in heartbreak late last night.
Authorities confirm that at least 28 people lost their lives and 25 others remain in critical condition after a fire broke out at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao. Witnesses report that the incident started near the stage area and quickly filled the venue with smoke, leading to a loss of power and limited visibility.
Footage shared online shows patrons rushing toward the exit as emergency crews were called to the scene. Firefighters arrived shortly after midnight and were able to bring the situation under control. Officials said many of those who passed away were found in a rear area of the venue, where they had likely gone to seek safety from the smoke.
“Visibility was very low and people were understandably frightened,” said National Police Chief Kitrat Panphet. “Our priority now is supporting the families and investigating the cause.”
Kaew-udon Poungppany, 24, shared his grief while speaking with reporters about his younger brother, who was among those who did not survive. “I tried to help when I saw what was happening,” he said quietly. “It all happened so fast.”
While the exact cause is still under review, preliminary findings from Bangkok’s disaster mitigation department point to a possible electrical issue involving an air conditioning unit. Officials have stated that a full investigation is underway to understand how the incident occurred and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Thailand has faced similar incidents in the past, and renewed attention is now being placed on venue safety standards and enforcement.
Tonight, our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the first responders who worked through the night.
