The government shutdown is starting to affect airports across the U.S. Over the past few days, staffing shortages among air traffic controllers, who have not received paychecks, have led to thousands of flight delays.

📊 Numbers at a glance:
- Over 9,000 flight delays on October 6–7, 2025, across the US.

- Key affected airports: Boston, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Nashville, Newark, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Burbank.

- Control centers in Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta have also reported short staffing issues.

- Adverse weather conditions in some cities compounded the problem.

- By October 8, the number of delayed flights had decreased to 1,356 as some staffing issues were resolved.

⚠️ What’s happening:
Air traffic control towers reduce the number of departures and arrivals per hour to ensure safe operations when staffing is low. Controllers are expected to work without pay as essential federal employees, which leads to stress and frustration. Although the FAA claims that US airspace is safe, flight disruptions will likely persist if the shutdown continues.

🌐 Looking ahead:
Extended shutdowns could also affect essential air service that keeps small and rural communities connected. This funding is set to run out soon, which may impact towns across the country, especially in Alaska.

💡 Tips for travelers:
- Check your flight status frequently, as delays can occur with little notice.

- Allow extra time for connections — if you have multiple flights, build in a buffer.

- Plan for disruptions. Consider purchasing travel insurance or buying flexible tickets.

- Arrive early at the airport, as longer lines at TSA and gates are likely.

- Stay informed by following FAA updates and your airline’s alerts.
