Could we reprogram the immune system to fight the effects of aging? Freeman Hrabowski Scholar Corina Amor Vegas & team at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory engineered CAR-T cells to recognize & destroy "zombie cells" that accumulate during aging, which trigger inflammation, frailty, metabolic decline, and cognitive loss. Aging mice that received a single dose showed improved health spans, pointing to a potential long-term way to bolster the aging immune system: bit.ly/4xkeeQh.
Teaching the Immune System to Fight Aging | HHMI Freeman Hrabowski Scholar Corina Amor Vegas adapted CAR-T cells, a cancer immunotherapy approach, to help aging immune systems relearn how to clear damaging senescent cells.
Hanna Gray Fellow Marissa Scavuzzo grew up knowing basic biomedical science can change lives. Today, she studies support cells called glia at Case Western Reserve University using the nervous system in the gut as a tool. Her message to prospective HGF program applicants: "You have nothing to lose & everything to gain" — & sometimes, second time’s the charm. Applications open 11/3! bit.ly/HGF26
