As principal of Salem Church Middle, Dr. Nick Olson is leading with a clear purpose of helping students discover who they are during the years that shape them most.

For Dr. Olson, it starts with recognizing the pivotal role he plays. “School leaders have to be more than just visible,” Olson says. “It is important to form relationships with as many members of the community as possible.”

His intentionality in building relationships is a catalyst to a positive schoolwide culture, where everyone works together to develop students on an academic, social and emotional level.

You can see the positive culture shine through via events like multicultural nights, connecting content from the classroom to real-world experiences, and encouraging engagement in the library and the outdoor classroom and garden.

Dr. Olson considers his work a privilege, and because of his intentionality and commitment, the community of Salem church Middle is thriving.
