In just the last two weeks, we’ve impounded 42 animals, and our 52 dog kennels were already full before they even arrived.

Opening your home, even temporarily, creates space, reduces stress, and gives these dogs a much-needed break.

🏡 Our Staycation Program is a fun way to help.
Take a dog home for a day, a few days, just for the weekend, spoil them a little, and help us learn more about their personality outside the shelter to better their chances of adoption.

The leash was already clipped to the puppy’s collar. We were halfway down the hallway to the lobby, ready to take him home for one week foster stay.

But Austin suddenly stopped. He lay flat on the floor, planted his big fluffy paws, and started whining, looking back at the kennels.

I walked back to see what he was looking at. In the back of kennel #48 was his sister, Denver. She was also a Labrador, but she had a large patch of missing fur and scars from an old injury that made her look a bit “imperfect.” In a busy shelter, dogs like her often get ignored. Most people want the perfect, playful Labradors they see in photos. When they see a dog with scars, they just walk past, thinking she might have too many problems. The staff told me they had to separate them to make space for new stray dogs. Austin was getting a chance to leave, but Denver had to stay.

When Denver saw Austin in the hallway, she pressed her face against the fence, her tail slowly wagging. Austin licked her nose through the wire. My throat tightened. You just don’t separate siblings like this. These dogs are so loyal, and they only had each other.

I looked at the volunteer, gave her my card, and said, “Please bring another leash.”

We failed as fosters on the very first day. Now we have two Labradors at home, and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Happy Gotcha Day to my beautiful, imperfect babies.
