He held the bread
before the breaking
Before the nails
before the crowd
before the sky would go dark
Jesus held it
Simple
ordinary
something they had seen a hundred times before
And still
everything was about to change
Because He knew
He knew His body would be broken
before His hands ever pulled the bread apart
He knew the weight of the cross
before the crumbs ever fell to the table
He knew
And still
He didn’t pull back
He didn’t hesitate
He broke it
Slowly
Intentionally
As if heaven itself
was watching the moment unfold
“This is My body”
Not a metaphor
not a story
A declaration
A promise
Given
before it was taken
And the disciples sat there
Close enough to touch Him
close enough to hear Him
but not close enough
to understand
Because how do you understand
a love like this
A love that chooses suffering
before it arrives
A love that gives itself
before it’s asked
A love that looks at broken people
and says
This is for you
For you
Peter
who would swear he never knew Him
Thomas
who would doubt
Judas
who would leave that table
with betrayal already in his hands
Still
Jesus broke the bread
And gave it
Not based on their faithfulness
not based on their understanding
But based on His love
Because this was never about them earning it
It was about Him choosing it
Choosing them
Choosing the cross
Choosing the pain
Choosing the moment
where His body would be torn
so theirs could be made whole
And I can’t help but sit here
in that moment
Watching Him
Watching the way His hands move
the way the bread gives way
the way the pieces fall
And realizing
This wasn’t just a meal
This was mercy
Placed in their hands
And they didn’t even know it
Not yet
But they would
When the bread was no longer in His hands
but His body was
When the breaking was no longer symbolic
but real
When the cross stood
where the table once was
And still
this moment mattered
Because Jesus showed them
He showed us
That nothing about the cross
was accidental
It was chosen
Even here
Even now
Even in the quiet
So when we take the bread
we’re not just remembering
We’re stepping into this moment
Into the room
into the silence
into the weight of what He was saying
This is My body
Broken
For you
And He knew
He knew everything
And still
He broke it first
