Why should you read aloud to your kiddos?

1️⃣ Models fluid reading
2️⃣ Encourages communication skills
3️⃣ Bonding + relaxation

Reading aloud to children combines the practice of speaking, reading and listening. Reading and speaking together speeds up a child’s ability to recognize words, comprehend sentence structures, and grasp the overall meaning of the text.

By reading out loud, you help develop your child’s listening skills, intonation and speech patterns which are all helpful for them as they grow to be fluent readers. You also spend quality time with your child and create a relaxing environment for their bodies to grow, learn, and be creative.

And if you’re looking for some extra credit 😉, reading aloud helps to build vocabulary, improves listening skills, encourages empathy, allows for imagination collaboration, encourages a love for reading, improves working memory + comprehension, and promotes critical thinking.

If we could encourage you to implement one thing into your child’s daily routine (at any age), it would be to read aloud to them!

Our Empowerment Coach, Rachel, works with a group of 1st graders (the WeeThinkers) regularly. Here is a plan for a session as she works to develop their self-awareness, social problem solving, and perspective taking.

Keeping your body in the group sends a nonverbal message that you’re interested in what others are saying and following the group plan. She demonstrated this by showing the Lego man not in the group and the Lego man in the group.

What makes each of us different is what makes us beautiful 👏🏼

The words we use to describe ourselves (and especially our children) MATTER. Let’s strive to use more appropriate and affirming language in our homes, offices, classrooms, and on social media.

Our Empowerment Coach, Rachel, leads a pre-k boys group. Pictured here are the boys practicing following the group’s plan. Their plan involved a regulation activity (GoNoodle Melting) to get the body calm after recess, and reading a story about following the group plan.
