Let’s talk about Total Disc Replacement (TDR) 🧠✨
When chronic back or neck pain stops responding to conservative treatments like physical therapy or injections, it’s easy to feel stuck. But for many, Total Disc Replacement (also known as artificial disc arthroplasty) offers a life-changing alternative to spinal fusion by preserving natural spinal mobility.
Here is what you need to know about spotting the signs and the journey back to movement:
The Warning Signs: When is TDR Considered?
Before a doctor recommends replacing a spinal disc, patients usually experience severe degenerative disc disease or a herniated disc. Keep an eye out for these telling symptoms:
Persistent, Deep Aches: Severe localized neck or lower back pain that worsens with sitting, bending, or twisting.
Radiating Pain (Sciatica/Radiculopathy): Sharp, shooting pain that travels down into the buttocks and legs (for lumbar issues) or shoots down the shoulders and arms (for cervical issues).
Neurological Weakness: Tingling, numbness, or a "pins and needles" sensation in the hands, fingers, legs, or feet.
Failed Conservative Care: Pain that remains relentless even after 6 to 12 weeks of dedicated physical therapy and medication.
The Healing Timeline: What to Expect
One of the biggest perks of TDR over traditional spinal fusion is a faster, more functional recovery timeline! Because you don't have to wait for bones to fuse together, the spine stabilizes relatively quickly.
Days 1–2 (The Starting Line): Patients are encouraged to stand and start gentle walking almost immediately after surgery to promote blood flow.
Weeks 1–2 (Early Days): Most people can resume sedentary desk work and light social activities within the first 14 days. Pain medication is gradually tapered off.
Weeks 4–6 (Building Strength): Under the guidance of physical therapy, light physical activities, core stabilization, and low-impact cardio (like stationary cycling) are introduced.
Months 2–3 (Returning to Sport): Many patients can safely return to light-to-moderate exercise, swimming, or running.
Months 3–6+ (Full Recovery): While most significant healing happens in the first few months, muscle strength, flexibility, and overall function will continue to improve for up to a year.
💡 Always remember: Every spine is unique! Exact recovery goals and timelines should always be cleared by your orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon.

🚨 Not all back pain is “just soreness.”
If your pain:
⚠️ Shoots down your leg
⚠️ Causes numbness or tingling
⚠️ Gets worse when walking or standing
…you may be dealing with nerve compression, not a simple muscle strain.
The sooner nerve pain is identified, the better your chances of preventing long-term damage and getting real relief.
Don’t ignore the warning signs your body is giving you.
📞 Schedule an evaluation today to find the root cause of your pain and start moving better again.

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Southeastern Spine 💙
Today we celebrate the incredible mothers who give so much of themselves every single day — at home, at work, and in the hearts of the people they love. We are so thankful for all of the amazing mothers on our staff, in our patient family, and throughout our community.
We also pause to honor and remember the mothers who are no longer with us. Their love, strength, wisdom, and memories continue to shape our lives every day. 🌷
A very special shout-out to Anne-Marie, Dr. Jolley’s wonderful wife, for raising 3 beautiful children and for the constant love and support she gives her family.
And to our incredible staff moms — thank you for everything you do. Not only are you amazing mothers at home, but somehow you also manage to “mother” your providers and co-workers too! We appreciate the care, patience, encouragement, reminders, snacks, organization, and all the other little things that keep our office running every day. 😊
To our patients — thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives. At Southeastern Spine, you are more than patients… you are family.
We wish everyone a day filled with love, laughter, memories, and appreciation for the mothers and mother figures who make life better every day. Happy Mother’s Day! 💐
