Unsuspecting Fish: a couple of years ago while recovering from a fall I was having issues sleeping for days at a time. Due to some nerve damage, it was almost impossible to sleep an entire night so my doctor prescribed a medication to calm the nerves and help me sleep. Eventually I became dependent on it and after the prescription expired I began purchasing over the counter sleep aids that were supposed to be “non habit forming” but that wasn’t the case. As with anything, whether it’s a sleep aid or something else that seems harmless, it can end up becoming a hook that’s hard to break free from. I wrote this song for those of us who naively took the bait.

That Magic:
A couple months back while participating in a month long writing exercise this song fell out onto the page. My wife and I are in the empty nest phase of life and most days are pretty quiet around the house. Sometimes I’ll stumble across a photograph of the kids when they were toddlers and wish I could go back and fix some of the mistakes I made as a parent. Maybe iInstead of rushing through bedtime routine maybe one more story wouldn’t have been so bad after all. I’m sure it’s safe to assume, if you have children, there are moments you look back and wish you hit reset. For those who are in the thick of it, I wrote this for you.

The Tree - About 15 years ago we planted trees lining each side of the driveway. Several years ago I began to notice that a couple of them began looking bare come springtime. A blight had invaded the trees without my knowledge and before I could try to salvage them they were already infected. Just like those trees sometimes disease is hard to discern until you peel away the surface and the rot is exposed.
