This special sweetie is our new Madagascar giant hognose snake!

At 9 years old and about 5 feet long, this girl isn’t likely to get much bigger, but Madagascar giant hognose snakes have been known to get up to 6 feet in length! Beyond their massive size, these snakes also have a flair for the theatrical arts. As a defense mechanism, Madagascar giant hognose snakes will dramatically throw themselves around and then go still to play dead in front of predators.

In the first photo, she’s showing off one of her unique adaptations: an upturned snout that looks like a pig nose! More than just silly to look at, the shape of her nose functions like a shovel to scoop and dig through the sandy soil of Madagascar forests.

You can come see this incredible animal in the Forests of the World section of the Zoo now!

Our chimps wanted us to remind everyone to stay safe in this heat wave and drink lots of water! 🐵💧

During heat waves in the summer, animals have access to their indoor night houses and temperature-controlled spaces. They also get fun, cooling enrichment like cold water to swim in, popcicles, or frozen water bottles!
