Workshop: Walking Compositions from 1-3 PM
Open Studios from 3 - 5 PM

For the workshop Walking Compositions, participants will be guided through a local artist’s practice to create sculptural drawings. These compositions will explore the impact of how sites are shaped by their inhabitants: plant, animal, plastic, and mineral. Participants will learn methods and form their own assembled compositions with objects and materials. It is suggested that participants bring their own collections of trinkets and gathered odds and ends to better personalize their sculptural drawings. Dive deeper into our Residents’ practices and see what they have made while at Stove Works. This is a casual, self-guided tour of artists’ studios and an opportunity to speak directly with them about their work! Occurring every third Saturday from February through November, Open Studios is the only time each month when our Artists-in-Residence studios are open to the public.

This year’s exhibition is curated by TK Smith, whose previous work includes Hand to Mouth in 2024. Smith is an award-winning independent curator, writer, and cultural historian. He most recently served as Curator of Arts of Africa and the African Diaspora at the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University, and previously as Assistant Curator of Art of the African Diaspora at the Barnes Foundation. His writing has appeared in exhibition catalogs, academic journals, and periodicals, including Art Papers, where he is a contributing editor. Smith is a past recipient of an Andy Warhol Arts Writers Grant and was awarded the Leo and Dorothea Rabkin Prize in art writing in 2024. He has lectured at institutions including Cornell University and is currently a doctoral candidate in the History of American Civilization at the University of Delaware, where his dissertation is entitled “Granite, Power, and P**s: The Transformation of a Confederate Symbol.”
