Next up: Jean Baptiste Point du Sable

Jean Baptiste Point du Sable was a black man born in 1745 in Haiti. He was a trader, a trapper and a pioneer. Point du Sable explored the Great Lakes area before settling with his wife. They built a farm and prosperous trading post near the opening of the Chicago River and lived there until 1800. Point du Sable is known as the "Father of Chicago" and was recognized as of the founder of Chicago in 1968, as he was the first permanent non-indigineous settler in the area.
