Despite being torn apart by slavery, Black families created strong systems of kinship. Extended family and community bonds ensured survival. These traditions remain central to Black Southern culture.
Black churches were centers of worship, education, organizing, and protection. In the South, they became safe spaces for community building and civil rights planning. Their influence still shapes Black communities today.
