Specialized crisis services for LGBTQ+ youth are set to return to the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline after Congress directed the Trump administration to restore the program.

The administration eliminated the Lifeline's dedicated "Press 3" option in 2025, citing funding concerns. Congress has now required those specialized services to be reinstated by the end of 2026.

While the service is returning, questions remain about what it will look like. The Trevor Project, which previously handled roughly half of the LGBTQ+ youth calls, is no longer part of the 988 network and is not eligible to provide the restored service under the current application process.
