One of the most exciting things happening at MARS right now involves a native Michigan species that most people will never get the chance to see in their lifetime..
We're thrilled to announce that we are currently incubating 11 Wood Turtle eggs under state permit, with plans to raise the hatchlings through the winter before they are eventually released back to their home.
In the photo, we're candling one of the eggs to see the progression of embryo development. Candling is a process that involves shining a light through the shell of the egg.
If you look closely, you can see the start of a network of tiny veins inside the egg. Those veins are exactly what we hoped to find, because they tell us the egg is fertile and developing.
For wildlife rehabilitators and conservationists, this is the kind of moment that makes your heart skip a beat.
Wood Turtles are considered a species of greatest conservation concern in Michigan and are protected due to ongoing population declines.
Habitat loss, road mortality, nest predation, illegal collection and human disturbance have all contributed to decreasing numbers across their range.
Every successful hatchling represents hope for the future of a species facing significant challenges.
Because Wood Turtles mature slowly and can take well over a decade to reach breeding age, population recovery is not something that happens quickly. Protecting eggs and young turtles during their most vulnerable stages can make a meaningful difference.
Watching these eggs develop has been nothing short of incredible. Right now, each one contains a tiny life that is growing day by day, hidden beneath a shell no larger than a few inches across.
Seeing those delicate veins reminds us that conservation isn't always dramatic rescues or emergency medical care. Sometimes it's patience, careful monitoring, and giving wildlife the opportunity to grow..
We are honored to be entrusted by the DNR with this rare opportunity and look forward to sharing updates as these little turtles continue their journey.
And shout out to Garland Exotics. Their incubators are high quality and precise. Having dependable equipment gives us peace of mind and helps ensure our eggs have the best possible start!
At MARS, we provide expert rehabilitation for cold-blooded animals, both wild and domestic. By working alongside a veterinarian who focuses on reptiles and amphibians, we're able to ensure that every patient who comes through our doors receives the specialized, compassionate, and often life-saving care they deserve.

Pulled an unexpected clutch tonight. My "male" pastel enchi stranger hypo het clown laid 4 eggs. Ive been trying to breed him to the same couple girls the last two years and neither went. So this year I changed it up to see if he was the issue or if they were. Well one of the "girls" turned out to also be miss sexed and we just got eggs. Dad was a super lesser clown or het clown with an additional 5 possible genes possibly hidden in the BEL. Hopefully this will show us what all he has in there.
Mom came from a bigger breeder and dad from a friend. Moral of the story is, always check the sexes, no matter who you buy from.
