There's a trend going around right now highlighting the nostalgia of the '90s summer.

Bikes until dark. A neighborhood that knew your name. Lunch that just appeared on the counter. The kind of freedom that only exists when the basics are covered — when home is safe, the fridge is full, and adults have enough breathing room to actually be present.

We see those posts and we feel it too.

And then we think about the children right here in the Lowcountry whose summers look nothing like that. Not because childhood changed but because housing instability, food insecurity, and the weight of crisis don't take a vacation.

Over 600 children in Charleston County are identified as experiencing homelessness. When school lets out, the safety net contracts. Meals disappear. Routines dissolve. The grown-up stress gets louder, not quieter.

We believe every child deserves the basics every day: a safe place to land, a full plate, a family with room to breathe, and the freedom to just be a kid.

That's why The Navigation Center walks alongside families navigating crisis from insecurity to hope. Through our Family Navigator Program, we coordinate housing support, healthcare, and food access for families with school-aged children, because family needs don't end when school lets out.
