Jefferson County Schools stands in solidarity with the families, children, educators, and communities in Uvalde, Texas, in the wake of the tragic events of May 24, 2022. There are no words that can restore what has been taken, not only from those individuals but from all of us. Everyone at Jefferson County Schools is here for the community as we support our children together. You can find a list of resources on speaking to children about this difficult topic following this link: https://bit.ly/39SwBoW. We will also have counseling staff available for any of our students or staff who need that support. Please join us as we continue our end-of-year student celebrations and honors while remaining mindful of the impacted communities and our solemn responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of our children.

The Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBOE) voted to adopt a policy to make masking in school optional during their regular meeting last night. The new policy goes into effect on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022. Jefferson County Schools staff will be observing the universal masking policy through the rest of this week. There will be no penalty for students who choose to remove their masks. A change in guidance from the WVDE and WVDHHR prompted board members to reconsider the original policy, which was adopted to minimize quarantine. The latest guidance gives Jefferson County Schools the flexibility to continue in-person learning while letting families choose whether to wear a mask. Complete guidance will be released on Monday when the new policy officially takes effect.

We are grateful for your ongoing support and patience. It has been a vital part of keeping students on-site this school year where we know they learn best. We are grateful for your partnership as we continue forward.
