Our new intakes Smudgie and Tilly had their vet visit yesterday. This bonded pair came to us from a person who had scheduled Tilly (black bunny) for euthanasia the next day due to what was described as a birth defect in her legs that was causing pain. After asking questions and finding out neither bunny had seen an exotic vet in their lives, we were skeptical and convinced the person to surrender this bonded pair.

And thank goodness we did! Our vet informed us that, yes, Tilly does hop differently due to her leg; however, it does not cause her pain or hurt her in any way. In fact, she gets around just fine and, as we suspected, definitely did not need to be euthanized or even considered for euthanasia. This demonstrates the importance of going to an exotics vet experienced in rabbits!!!

Both Tilly and Smudgie checked out well other than being a little skinny. They received their first RHDV vaccine and will return for their booster in 3 weeks. Both bunnies are spayed/neutered.

Starlight had her vet visit today. She is not spayed and was unfortunately found to have a mass on one of her mammary glands. Luckily, on x-ray there was no sign of spread to the lungs so the vet is very hopeful that it can be taken care of with her spay.

This brings up the importance of spaying rabbits. Starlight is about 4 years old. She demonstrates the statistic that 80% of unspayed female rabbits develop a reproductive cancer by the age of 5 years or earlier. Please spay and neuter your rabbits. Many times this cancer is not caught early enough. We hope it has for Starlight.
