This year's Black History Month marks a historic milestone—100 years since Carter G. Woodson established the first Black History observance in 1926. A century later, the moment calls for reflection and continued commitment to honoring Black excellence, leadership, and impact.

Throughout February, VTG is recognizing Black leaders who have shaped our nation’s defense, technology, and security communities. We begin with Rear Admiral Anthony “Tony” Watson, a trailblazer in U.S. submarine history and one of the first African American commanding officers of a nuclear submarine, later becoming the first Black submariner promoted to rear admiral.

His career included commanding fast-attack submarines, leading submarine squadrons, and serving at the Pentagon. Throughout his service, he also helped advance inclusion within one of the Navy’s most technically demanding fields. His legacy reminds us that true leadership creates opportunities for others to follow.
