Floridians arrived early this morning to speak against Rodney Barreto’s confirmation to chair our Florida Wildlife Commission. The Senators on the Ethics Committee had each received HUNDREDS of phone calls and emails, for weeks prior. Floridians oppose this developer, lobbyist, and perjurer to lead our wildlife agency. THIS MORNING, within the first few minutes, the senators decided to vote on >100 appointees at once, without disclosing to the public which appointees they were voting on. They unanimously voted Yes on this “block”. Confused, the Floridians who had driven overnight, and signed up to speak, spent the next 2 hours quietly trying to figure out if Rodney Barreto had already been voted on, and if they would be given the chance to speak. They asked the aides and the security personnel in the room, but were not given an answer. Not until the very end did it become clear that Barreto had already been confirmed, without discussion, AND that the speakers opposing Barreto would not be given a chance to speak, despite having registered as speakers at the start.
