สวัสดีปีใหม่ครับทุกท่าน ปีใหม่ก็ได้ฤกษ์บล็อกใหม่ซะที่นะครับ ยังคงเป็นซีรี่ส์ประสบการณ์ของนักเรียนทุน ก.พ. ที่คิดว่าคงจะเป็นประโยชน์กับเพื่อนๆ พี่ๆ น้องๆ ไม่มากก็น้อยครับ

บล็อกนี้ผมจะพูดถึงกระบวนการสมัครเรียนต่อในมหาวิทยาลัยในต่างประเทศนะครับ เป็นบล็อคที่ผมหวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่า สมัยที่ผมได้ทุนจะมีคนเขียนอะไรแบบนี้ไว้บ้าง ฮ่าาา

ในนี้มำคำแนะนำจากประสบการณ์ตรงของผมเอง และมีข้อมูลที่คิดว่าน่จะเป็นประโยชน์กับคนที่อยากจะไปเรียนต่างปะรเทศ ไม่มากก็น้อยครับ

วันนี้ไปเจอ speech ที่เคยเขียนเมื่อตอนที่ได้รับเชิญไปเป็นตัวแทน Graduate Student กล่าวในงาน Asina American Cultural Center (AACC) leadership award เมื่อปีที่แล้ว เห็นว่าน่าจะเป็นประโยชน์ เลยเอามาแปะซะหน่อย

I am a GLOBE program member. So far this has been the most memorable experience for me as an international graduate student at the U of I.

Imagine having to leave your friends, family, and moving to another country by yourself. You are half the globe away from home. You have no one to physically talk to when you feel sad or lonely. That’s basically me in my first year at the U of I. But, luckily, I was accepted to join the GLOBE program in Fall 2018. And I can say this program has changed my life.

I met my best friends, brothers, and sisters from different parents through this program. I now have friends and families from all around the world. And I am now feeling that “I am not alone anymore”. Not only these friends and families, but the program itself has helped me to develop personally and professionally as a graduate student. In GLOBE cohorts, we usually go to the gym together at least once a week to play sports like badminton, volleyball, and soccer. This helps me to get healthier and happier with myself. As for the professional aspect, Globe also assisted me with my plan to pursue a Ph.D. after my graduation. Through Globe, I learned how to find the research topic and how to manage my time as a Ph.D. student.

Even though GLOBE is my most valuable experience, I am not going to advertise the program too much here because of 2 reasons. Firstly, the only way you experience it is by joining the program yourself and by being open-minded. Secondly, I have also been told to inspire you to become a leader. So, let’s talk about leadership skills.

I have been in leadership positions on many occasions. My proudest position was in my senior year as an undergrad. I was elected as the president of the dormitory committee from over a thousand students in the dormitory. Besides that, in the same year, I was also responsible for organizing a three-day event with more than 200 staff members and over 50,000 attendees.

From my observation during the past 31 years of my life, I believe that there are 4 important things for becoming a leader.

First. Be a team player. As you work as a team, the easiest start is to be a good team player. By helping your team deal with conflict, develop cohesion and work together, your team will appreciate your effort to help them and you will gain more trust from your team members.

Second. Learn to communicate well. As a leader, you need to have a clear goal in mind and lead the team in the right direction. Therefore, you have to convey a clear understanding of what needs to be done and why. Speak truthfully and accurately—rather than emotionally—about challenges, and then give positive recommendations about how to overcome them.

Third. Be open to feedback and criticism, and use it to grow. When you are criticized or you make a mistake, own it. Ask for corrective feedback. It might be difficult, but it demonstrates you are clear about your team. And you are not only comfortable with your abilities but you are willing to learn from mistakes.

Last but not least. Lead from where you are. That means you can become a leader or use your leadership skills even when you don’t have the title. Actually, leading while not formally in charge is the most difficult thing to do but it is something that will get you noticed. Remember that a leader isn’t always identified by a title.

Be a team player, learn to communicate well, be open to feedback and criticism, use this to grow, and lead from where you are. Those are 4 things to keep in mind if you want to become a leader.

And before I end this speech, I would like to thank you, Yun Shi, Program Director of International Education, for organizing this amazing program called Global Leaders: Orange and Blue Engagement (Globe) that connects domestic and international students. And for graduating seniors. Congratulations to all of you on being a graduate. I hope that this is just the start of many accomplishments still to come. Good luck and well done!
