This evening I joined with the Menno Haven Community as we celebrated Sam Worley’s 105th birthday. Sam is a friend to many here in Franklin County and across Pennsylvania. Born in Fannettsburg on June 13, 1921, Sam served this country with honor and distinction as a member of the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, and he was recognized by the Chapel of Four Chaplains with the Legion of Honor Gold Medallion for his outstanding service. He was stationed in Tampa, Florida; Long Island, New York; Boston, Massachusetts; and England.

After a thirty-five-year career at a local bank, Sam served our community as Chair of the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, as a Borough Councilman, and as Mayor of Chambersburg. Sam served as President of the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs, which honored him with the President's Award for Lifetime Achievement. He’s been active in so many civic endeavors and received countless awards, too many to mention.

Sam Worley is a unique treasure to Franklin County. We wish him a very happy birthday and another year of thriving!
