🌨️ to the construction of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station during the 2001 and 2002 seasons! 🏗️

Brave crews worked in extreme cold to upgrade and expand the station, ensuring it could support science and research in one of the most remote places on Earth. From hauling materials to assembling structures, every step was a testament to teamwork and determination. 💪🌍

to January 1, 1992, when the NSF Research Vessel Nathaniel B. Palmer (NBP) was officially dedicated at the Avondale Shipyards in Louisiana. National Science Foundation Director, Walter Massey and Louisiana Congresswoman Lindy Boggs were on hand at the dedication ceremony.

For over 30 years, this icebreaker and research platform supported groundbreaking U.S. Antarctic science—sailing through the Southern Ocean, breaking pack ice, and carrying researchers to new discoveries at the bottom of the world.

With the NBP having just departed on her final voyage, we thought it a fitting moment to look back at where it all began.
